Ockham's Razor Theory:
Theory: This theorem was first put forth by William Ockham, a 14th century English Franciscan friar.
The principle says that if there are several possible reasons for something happening, the reason that makes the fewest assumptions is likely to be the right one. This philosophy is of great significance to the paranormal investigator.
As investigators of the paranormal, we often encounter very strange and unusual events during an investigation or while reviewing the evidence. But sometimes, in our desire to find a good piece of evidence, we (as a community) reach pretty far and wide to “put the pieces together”. Too often are very obvious or common explanations overlooked, or even excused, in place of a much more elaborate justification for deeming something to be paranormal in nature.
By applying the Occam’s Razor theorem, it can more clearly be seen that if you dismiss "A" as being the explanation while presuming "B", "C", and "D" in order to conclude the evidence is paranormal, then most likely "A" is the true answer. It’s not a hard & fast rule, but most often it is so.
For example:
- A photograph full of orbs taken outdoors on a hot and humid August night could be legitimately paranormal, but more than likely it’s just moisture in the air.
- The recorded sound of a floor board creaking in an old house during the winter is probably more than likely the wood expanding/contracting due to the temperature rather than being the foot steps of a ghost.
- An EMF reading of 97mg in the living room of a home is more probably the result of electric devices or poor wiring in the house than an entity manifesting itself.
- A person claiming demonic activity in their home where nothing is found on numerous investigations could indicate that the entity is hiding, but it is more likely that the person is misinterpreting certain events.
Electromagnetic Field Theories:
- Theory #1: When a ghost manifests it may give off an Electromagnetic Field (EMF). EMF meters can detect electromagnetic fields.
- Theory #2: When a ghost manifests, it needs energy to do so. Some people believe that a ghost can draw the energy from a high electromagnetic field (EMF), which can then cause it to manifest.
There have been studies done that state a reading of 0mg or 2mg are considered safe levels of continuous exposure to EMF. Living in areas of high exposure to EMF (3mg or higher) can lead to some of the following problems:If you are hypersensitive to Electromagnetic Fields (EMF), then a continuous field of 1mg can affect you.
Childhood Leukemia
Brain Cancer
Miscarriages
Fetal Abnormalities
Nausea
Migraines
Fatigue
Feelings of Being Watched or Followed
Hallucinations
Depression

Static Electricity Theory:
Theory: When a spirit manifests, it will give off a static
electric charge that can be picked up by a meter that detects static
electricity.
When applying the Static Electricity Theory in the paranormal field, it is important to know that static electricity can be manufactured from a number of sources.
Some examples of things that generate static electricity:
- Clothing such as Nylon and Fleece
- Television Sets
- Carpeted Floors
When using equipment that detects static electricity, it is important to know the weather for the day. Thunderstorms can cause static electricity and may affect your readings.
Radio Frequency Theory:
A Radio Frequency, or RF, is an electromagnetic wave frequency that usually
ranges from 9kHz to 300GHz but is not limited to.
Theory #1: The Radio Frequency Theory states that if a spirit wants to communicate with you, it will try and do so by using radio frequencies that are available. Some of the devices that are available to receive radio signals are as follows:While investigating, the spirit can try and communicate with you by using any available radio frequency in the area, being able to use direct communication with you. When using these devices you must be aware of the frequencies used in the area such as AM and FM Frequencies. These frequencies will pick up broadcasts from all over the area, such as news or music, that is normally broadcasted over AM or FM stations. When analyzing your data be sure to rule out any possibility that it can be a normal broadcast. If you happen to get real evidence using these devices, it is called an RVP (Radio Voice Phenomenon).

the Franks Box, which is also known as the “Telephone to the Dead”.
Theory #2: When a spirit is manifesting, it will give off a radio frequency that can be picked up by an RF meter.
Temperature Theory:
Theory: when a spirit starts to manifest, it will draw in heat
energy around the area, causing either a cold or a hot spot.
- A cold spot would form because the heat energy is being sucked out of the air, causing the air around the entity to be cold.
- A hot spot would form because the heat energy is being sucked out of the air and confined to a specific area, causing a hot spot.
Laser Projection Grid Theory:
Theory: When the laser dots are projected into an area, and an
entity crosses the dots, it will cause a break in the projection. This will give
a visual confirmation of the presence of something, even if the entity itself
is not visible to the naked eye. Also, by using dot projection, it may be
possible to determine the size and shape of the entity as it passes through the
projection field.
SAFETY NOTE: A Laser Projector is safe for exposure to bare skin. However, caution should be used when viewing the beam. Injuries to the eye and/or vision may occur if the beam is viewed directly into the eye. Also, any form of optical magnification and/or focusing can enhance the power of the beam and cause greater injury including loss of sight. This includes
binoculars
telescopes
SLR camera lenses
eyeglasses
contact lenses.
Dowsing Rods Theory:
Theory: In theory, spirits give off spiritual energy. Any
energy that surrounds the dowsing rods will cause them to either cross or
uncross.
Using Alternative Light Spectrum Theory:
Theory: Entities, spirits, shadows, etc. may be more visible in
other light spectrums rather than the normal narrow range of visible light.
Visible light is part of what is know as the Electromagnetic Spectrum.
The spectrum starts with a longer wave/lower frequency light on the left side, which includes the infra red lights, radar, FM/AM and television signals, followed by the narrow section of visible light, through to the shorter wave/higher frequency ultra violet lights, X-Rays, and Gamma Rays on the right end of the spectrum.
EVP Theory:
An EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) is a disembodied voice
that you cannot hear at the time of the investigation, but when you listen to
your audio recordings during "Post-Investigation" Review, there are voices on
the recording that cannot be explained.
EVPs can come through any type of audio recording device such as an audio-cassette recorder, digital audio recorder, and even video cameras.
EVPs come in a wide range of styles. Some EVPs are loud and clear, while others are much softer and need headphones or amplification to hear. Some EVPs are also either low, garbled, or otherwise unclear.
While there could be many reasons why EVPs come in such a wide variety of styles, to better help describe the characteristics of an EVP, paranormal investigators and researchers often use a classification system to rate the quality of EVP recordings.
The following is the classification list of EVPs that are generally accepted and used by paranormal researchers and investigators:
- Class A – This type of EVP is loud, clear and of very high quality. The voice is easily understandable and does not need enhancement or amplification. Everyone listening to the EVP will agree on what is being said.
- Class B – This type of EVP is of somewhat lesser quality and clarity than a Class A EVP, but still very audible. Class B EVPs may need some amount of enhancement or amplification to be heard clearer. Everyone listening to the EVP will be about a 50/50 split as to what is being said.
- Class C – This is the most common type of EVP. This is a lower quality EVP. A Class C EVP will need some amount of enhancement and/or amplification to be heard clearer. There may even be debate whether or not an EVP is actually present. Everyone listening to the EVP will have their own opinion as to what is being said. There will be a variety of possibilities of what is being said.
- Class D – These are very poor quality EVPs. Extremely questionable if it is even an EVP. Also referred to as EVP chatter, whispers, breathing noises, and airy sounds. Some investigators use Class D as a “holding” classification until further analysis is performed. Either way, Class D EVPs are not used as presentable evidence.
Energy Loss/Drain Theory:
Theory: Investigators believe that when a spirit is trying to
manifest, it will try and draw in any energy that is around the area.
The spirit may try and draw energy from the investigators themselves, causing them to suddenly feel nauseous or tired. The spirit may draw from the electrical power of the equipment's batteries that are in use.
White Noise Theory:
Theory 1: Using white noise during an EVP investigation
relies on the random sound reorganization theory of EVP formation. That theory
holds that entities take sounds in the ambient environment and somehow
reorganize them into coherent words for us to hear. By providing a white noise
source, or at least investigating near a white noise source, you are providing
a base of raw sound for the entity to use to form communication. However, a
significant drawback to using this technique is that the white noise can be
hard to filter out later when you analyze your recordings, and can thus
contaminate an otherwise good EVP recording.
White noise can be made from many sources. As previously mentioned, a radio set to an empty channel, an electric fan or similar motor, the babbling of a stream, or a running faucet are all good sources of white noise. Additionally, there are white noise generators available (often sold as sleep aids) and software that will generate a white noise signal from a PC.Theory 2: This theory is that white noise can be used to filter out background noise or enhance EVPs when listening to recordings. To use white noise in this manner, place the EVP recorder (or speaker) on one side of you and the white noise source on the other side. Stand (or sit) in the middle and turn both on. As you listen to the recording, the white noise source will either filter out background noise on the recording and/or enhance any EVPs captured.
There is some evidence this may work. Noise cancelling headphones are based on a similar principle. These types of headphones play low levels of white noise through the speakers to filter out surrounding noise and enhance the quality of the audio. Some EVP researchers and paranormal investigators use noise cancelling headphones and find them very helpful.
