High John Root

Searcy History/Folklore:

John the Conqueror, a.k.a High John de Conqueror, is a folk story hero from African folklore. John is an African prince who was sold into slavery in the Americas, but despite his enslavement, his spirit was never broken. John was known as a trickster, as he played tricks to evade his masters.

Eventually he escaped his slavers and fell in love with Lilith, the Devil's daughter. The Devil did not like John and sought to destroy him, so he gave him impossible tasks to complete. Lilith, though, helped John by crafting magical tools to complete the challenges given by the Devil, but she warned that the Devil wanted to kill him even if he did complete the tasks. John and Lilith stole the Devil's horse, and he escaped his fate. They escaped by shape shifting, so whenever the Devil came close to finding them, they would disguise themselves into fruits, plants, buildings, and animals. Lilith only used her magical powers to help John in exchange for his promise to marry her.

John moves back to Africa with his new wife. During that time they renounce their powers in exchange for freedom and everlasting love. Their love and magic were then put into the form of a root. Whenever the powers are needed, one can summon them by picking up the root and evoking his name, High John the Conqueror!
